Positano and the Amalfi Coast: What you should know

ITALY :

Between Sorrento and Salerno there is this infinitely beautiful stretch of coast overlooking the sea, surrounded by many villages.

The most popular towns are Positano, Amalfi, Vietri sul Mare but there is much more to discover.

The best way to see the Amalfi coast is to rent a car. There are many sites where you can rent a car in Salerno or Naples for example www.rentalcars.com, and the most famous www.hertz.com  and Avis, www.avis.com or www.budgetautonoleggio.it

You can arrive by train or plane to Naples, you can take advantage to see maschio Angioino castle the most famous castle in Naples, and then rent a car and visit by chance Sorrento then  arrive in Positano the pearl of the Amalfi coast and continue with the other villages which each has its own characteristic.

If you want to see the area, and extend the visit to Naples and Pompei I would recommend at least 5 days in the area.
If you come from Salerno you rent the car and you will find  Vietri, Amalfi, Praiano before arriving to Positano.

In Amalfi, for example, there is an excellent restaurant where to eat the homemade pasta:
Trattoria DA BARRACCA.

Lots of characteristic fashion design shop and of course what made famous the Amalfi coast! LIMONCELLO! when you drive all along  you see lemon trees all around!

More over In Positano there is a very elegant restaurant where you eat well and spend half of what you would spend in other restaurants in the center of Positano, called Fornillo.

I stayed in Positano at the 4 * Hotel Art Pasitea very interesting, stylish and very welcoming. I would certainly recommend it.

You can also take the train called Circumvesuviana from  Pompei -Naples to Sorrento at a very little cost, ( that is normally very busy)  but then it is quite difficult to get around the Amalfi coast if you have no car.

You can find the timetable below:

Tickets Sorrento – Naples costs € 4,10

Certainly Easter is a good time to go, hotels and restaurants have opened in early April, so surely there will be movement and perhaps even better than the summer where the Amalfi Coast is assaulted by people.

Another highly recommended period is September, because it’s always hot and you can enjoy the sun of the Coast and dinners on the terraces overlooking the sea.
