A few hours from Sydney ( 3.45hr) and you landed in a Tropical Paradise.
The island is bigger than what I was expecting,so it took me 2 hrs to reach my fijian resort- Mango bay in the coral cost from Nadi. Then from the coral coast to Suva the capital,it takes other 2 hrs by car if you want to explore more..
Not bad..The resort is Fijian style with palm tree and quite rustic accommodation with a comfortable bedroom and garden or beach bungalow;even if when I arrived, there was someone else in my room by mistake at 11pm, but after a few more arrangements the next day and patience I was able to enjoy the next 6 days.
Take your time when visiting Fiji because everything is slow and the Fijians take their time to satisfy your needs:so one recommendation;Be patient! If you are used to the english efficiency,be patient even if they used to be an english colony, they take Fiji time seriously and slowly.
Fiji is a republic since 1970. Even if the people are quite poor…
The nature surround everything and you really feel that still owns the place around you,the island.
The people live with what they have or catch! They fish, they cut the coconut from the trees and eat what they produce from their vegetable gardens!
I had the chance to speak to some fijians and it was incredible to realize how lucky we are. The hourly wage is 2.25fijian dollars that are equivalent to 1€. So a guy that was driving me to the airport told me that he has been without job for 7 years, really tough, and luckily now he’s been working for 1yr with this company. (Pacific destinations) Indeed he is not able to buy milk because is really expensive 4dollars, or bread etc so they live with what they catch or produce from the garden. They don’t have electricity or fridge so they eat every day what they brought for the day; but he knows a process on how to conserve the fish for months! He goes lobster hunting sometimes and …at that point I was really jealous so he invited me next time to stay in his house in his village and go lobster hunting! Really nice! I visited with 2 other Australian guys a village nearby and you realised that they really live with nothing! Sleep on the floor, built the little house with bricks and then they put some metal sheet around to decorate.
What you see on the right picture is really a rich rich guy who could built a better house.
All the guys working at the resort were really friendly.They walk to reach home from their job and is really frequent to do hitch-hiking also because they all know each others!
One day we met a guy at the village nearby that was working at our resort and he introduced us his wife (that was doing the laundry at a fountain nearby)and the children. He more over told us that is not possible for someone born in a village to move to another village, if he has to move temporarily to another village he has to make a request to the government.
Actually it was really interesting to learn about Fijian people. Indeed the nature and the flowers all around are spectacular!! Here some photos for you!:

A poche ore da Sydney (3.45hr) si sbarca in un Paradiso Tropicale.
L’isola è più grande di quello che mi aspettavo, quindi mi ci sono volute 2 ore da Nadi per raggiungere il mio Mango bay resort situato nella coral coast. Poi dalla coral coast alla capitale Suva, ci vogliono altri 2 ore in auto.
Non male ..Garden o beach Bungalow stile fijiano con palme e alloggi piuttosto rustici con un letto confortevole; anche se quando sono arrivata, c’era qualcun altro nella mia stanza per errore alle 23.. ma l’indomani dopo un paio di richieste in reception e pazienza sono stata in grado di godermi i prossimi 6 giorni.
Naturalmente prendete il vostro tempo quando visitate le Fiji perché tutto è lento e i fijiani prendono il loro tempo per soddisfare le vostre esigenze: così vi faccio una raccomandazione; Siate paziente! Se siete abituati all’efficienza inglese, siate paziente perchè anche se erano una colonia inglese, prendono il loro “tempo Fijiano” sul serio e quindi lentamente.
Fiji è una repubblica dal 1970. Anche se le persone sono molto povere…
La natura circonda tutto e vi sentirete davvero che possiede ancora il luogo intorno a voi, l’isola.
La gente vive con quello che ha o si procura pescando! Hanno pesce, tagliano le noci di cocco dagli alberi e mangiano ciò che producono dai loro orti!
Ho avuto la possibilità di parlare con alcuni Fijiani ed è stato incredibile per rendersi conto quanto siamo fortunati. Il salario orario è di 2.25 dollari fijian equivalenti a 1 €. Così un signore che mi stava portando verso l’aeroporto mi ha detto che è stato senza lavoro per 7 anni, davvero difficile, e fortunatamente ora è da un anno che lavora per questa compagnia. (Pacific destinations) .In effetti lui non è in grado di comprare il latte, perché è molto costoso, 4dollari o pane o altre cose quindi vivono con quello che cacciano o producono dal giardino. Non hanno elettricità o frigo in modo che mangiano tutti i giorni quello che hanno portato per la giornata; ma lui sa un processo su come conservare il pesce per mesi! Caccia aragoste la sera a volte e … a quel punto ero davvero gelosa così mi ha invitato la prossima volta a rimanere nella sua casa nel suo villaggio e ad andare a cacciare le aragoste di notte! 🙂 Veramente bello!
Ho visitato con 2 altri ragazzi australiani un villaggio vicino e ci siamo resi conto che in realtà vivono con niente! Dormono sul pavimento, costruiscono la casetta con mattoni e poi mettono un po ‘di lamiera intorno per decorare.
Quello che si vede nella foto è davvero un ragazzo ricco che ha costruito una casa migliore.
Sotto i nostri occhi hanno pescato un tonno pinna gialla e un giant trevally (carango gigante)
Tutti i ragazzi che lavorano al villaggio sono davvero gentili .Per arrivare a casa dal loro lavoro camminano o è molto frequente che facciano l’ autostop anche perché si conoscono tutti .
Un giorno abbiamo incontrato un ragazzo al villaggio vicino che stava lavorando al nostro resort e ci ha presentato sua moglie (che stava facendo il bucato in una fontana nelle vicinanze)e i bambini. In piu’ ci ha detto che non è possibile per una persona nata in un villaggio trasferirsi in un altro villaggio e se deve trasferirsi temporaneamente in un altro paese deve fare una richiesta al governo.
In realtà è stato davvero interessante conoscere la gente delle Fiji. La natura poi ed i fiori tutto intorno sono spettacolari.
